William Barton (Bart) Howe was born in
Westfield, Pa. Nov. 5, 1865 to Delos and
Cornela Howe. The family later moved to
Woodbury County Iowa. There he met and
married Ruby Ann Sturgis Feb. 5, 1887.
Ruby was born Jan. 6, 1872 in Iowa. Bart
and Ruby had 4 daughters all born in
Woodbury County Iowa. The daughters were:
1. Elizabeth (Lizzie) born Dec. 1, 1887. She
married Wm (Bill) Marshall Jan. 1, 1913 at
Cody, Nebr. They had 2 daughters, Williev
Condron and Goldie Van Wart. Lizzie died
May 22, 1977, Bill died July 1985.
2. Maudie was born Aug. 4, 1891. She
married Ben Denson 1910 at her parents
home in Cherry County, Nebr. They had 2
children Alida & Richard. Maudie died June
2, 1955 and Ben died Dec. 13, 1966.
3. Abbie was born Nov. 22, 1893. She
married Waldron Tucker Dec. 24, 1911 in
Hooker County, Nebr. They had 3 children,
Louis, Seabert and Eva. Abbie married Ed
Coates in 1931. Abbie is still living (1987) at
the age of 94 years, in Caldwell, Idaho.
Waldron Tucker died in 1954 and Ed Coates
in 1950.
4. Elota was born Aug. 9, 1899. She married
Wm (Bee) Baldwin May 1917. She died Sept.
1943 when their 12th child was born. Bee died
May 1983.
Bart and Ruby Howe and 4 daughters
moved from Iowa to Madison County Nebr.
and on to Cherry County, Nebr. in 1906. They
lived a short while in Madison County. Bart
homesteaded on a place in Cherry County,
about 22 miles north of Mullen, Nebr. where
they farmed and lived in a sod house as most
people did in those days. Mullen was their
home town where they got supplies. They
lived different places in Cherry and Hooker
Counties. About 1913 they ran a hotel in
Valentine, Nebr.
All of their daughters and families lived in
Mullen & in Hooker County some time
during their lives.
Bart died Feb. 27, 1932 at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Wm Marshall in Mullen.
Ruby moved into Mullen after his death
and worked doing house work for different
ones, until she married J.C. Jones, a
blacksmith in Mullen in 1939.
Ruby died Jan. 13, 1949 at her home in
Mullen during the '49 blizzard.
Bart, Ruby and the three daughters and
their husbands are buried in Cedarview
Cemetery in Mullen, Nebr.
