Clara (Jeffords) Humphrey
A.G. (Arthur Gilbert) Humphrey
A.G. (Arthur Gilbert) Humphrey was born
May 10, 1880 on a farm near Drakesville,
Davis County, Iowa. He was the oldest child
of Alfred and Charlotte (Runkles) Hum-
phreys. A.G. received his early education in
the rural schools of Iowa and the city schools
of Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a graduate of
the Southern Iowa Normal Scientific and
Business Institute at Bloomsfield, Iowa and
later attended the Highland Park College of
Law where he studied law and taught shorth-
and. He received his Degree of Bachelor of
Laws on May 5, 1904 in Iowa.
After coming to Nebraska to live, he taught
two terms of school in the Mullen Schools. He
acquired the name "Prof" at this time and
was affectionately called Prof by his many
friends and business associates.
As soon as he was admitted to the Nebras-
ka Bar, he began his long practice of Law in
Mullen. He also served as County Judge and
as County Attorney of Hooker County.
A.G. and Clara Charlotte (Jeffords) Hum-
phrey were married on Oct. 30, 1910. Clara
was born to Charles and Mary (Pierce)
Jeffords on November 27, 1884 at Broken
Bow, Custer County, Nebraska.
Clara taught schools in Custer and Hooker
Counties from 1903 to 1907. She also served
as a Mullen Postmistress in the early days.
Clara served in the Nebraska Legislature
from 1925 to 1927.
Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey were confirmed
in the first confirmation class of the St.
Joseph Episcopal Church in 1909. Both took
interested and active parts in all its work.
A.G. was a member of the Knights Templar
and Shrine and Mullen Masonic Lodge, 282,
A.F. and A.M. Both were members of the
Mullen Chapter of the Order of the Eastern
Star. Clara was also active in the American
Legion Auxillary.
A.G. passed away on September 14, 1940
and Clara on December 9, 1964.
The Humphreys had three children 4: Carl
Gilbert, Phyllis Jean and Jack Alfred.
