HUMPHREY, EMERY J. AND PHYLLIS (DYER)

Emery came to Mullen from Callaway,
Nebraska where he lived with his parents,
Guy and Ethel Pierrard Humphrey, the fall
of 1934 to attend his junior and senior years
of high school. He lived with his Uncle and
family, A.G. Humphrey. He had attended his
first two years of high school at a small rural
high school near Callaway. Emery graduated
from Mullen High School with the Class of
1936.

Phyllis L. Dyer, daughter of George and
Freda Morris Dyer, Whitman, Nebraska
came to Mullen and opened a beauty shop.
She had graduated from high school at
Curtiss, Nebraska and attended beauty
school in Denver. She and Emery were
married July 13, 1940 Lincoln, NE.

They moved to San Diego, CA where
Emery worked for Consolidated Aircraft
during WW II. Son Gary was born here.
When the war was over they moved to
Drakesville, Iowa where they farmed. Daugh-
ters Judy and Carol were born while they
lived in Iowa.

In 1947 they moved to Pine River, MN.
where they bought a small farm. Emery
supplemented the income by working in the
iron mines at Hibbing, MN. Daughter Leiloni
was born at Brainerd, MN. while they lived
here.

Emery began driving for Kenosha Auto
Transport, Kenosha, Wis. Phyllis and three
girls moved to Mullen where Phyllis clerked
in Dutton's store. Son Gary remained in MN.
and graduated from the Park Rapids High
School, in 1960. Judy and Carol graduated
from Mullen High School in the years 1962
and 1963. Following their graduation, Phyllis
and Leloni moved to Waukegan, Ill. to be
near Emery.

By now Gary was married and living on the
farm. Later, Emery, Phyllis and Leiloni
bought a farm joining the first one and moved
back. They continued farming until 1985
when they semi-retired. They divide their
"retirement" time among Judy in Virginia,
Carol in California and Leiloni in St. Paul,
MN.
