Pete Inman Family, L to R: Lorena, Pete, Evelyn holding Laura, Ruth
and Nina. Ethel in front.

In the fall of 1930, Loren, "Pete" Inman
and wife Evelyn with their family Lorena,
Ruth, and Nina moved to Hecla, Nebraska
from Ardmore, South Dakota. Mr. Inman
soon was employed by the C.B.&Q Railroad.

On 1931 Ethel Margeret was
born to Pete and Evelyn Inman. Dr. Walker
and Nurse Phipps made the 10-mile trip from
Mullen to Hecla to deliver the baby, probably
fighting cold weather and the Sand Hill
roads.

Laura Darlene Inman was born
1938 to Evelyn and Pete at the Kemp home
in Mullen. She didn't get to attend school in
Hecla as it was closed when she became
school age.

Going to Mullen on Saturday night was our
high light of entertainment. The folks always
bought their groceries at the Grocery Store,
Johnson's. Times were hard so Mr. Inman
charged their groceries. On railroad pay day
when he paid the bill, R. Chester Johnson
always gave them a big sack of candy. That
small gift of appreciation was always remem-
bered by the Inman family.

Lorena and Ruth graduated from the
Mullen High School in 1940. Mr. Inman was
transferred to Crawford, Nebraska in 1943.

I can still visualize the little town of Hecla
when we drive by the empty space and get a
lump in my throat; I am thankful for the
wonderful memories of a tiny town in the
Sandhills.
