Lucy and John Isom 1981


John Floyd Isom was born Oct. 9, 1921 on
a ranch north of Mullen (near the Swedener
place) youngest son of Charles Terry and
Mattie Carr Isom. John lost his Mother at an
early age, and grew up on ranches north of
Mullen, attending various country schools. In
1935 his Father and step-mother (Nellie
Boyer Isom) and family moved to Mullen.
John graduated from Mullen High School in
1939. He worked for his Dad carrying mail,
on ranches, and for Franke Cons't Co. until
he entered the Army in 1942. He sailed from
the states, destination unknown on Xmas eve
1942. Days later the boat he was on hit a mine
injuring his back and he was hospitalized at
Panama. After recovering he remained in
Panama for 36 months, until his discharge in
1945. Upon returning home he worked for
Mathews Chev. for a short time then went to
work for Franke Cons't for 28 years. In Dec.
1945 John and Lucy Junod were married and
they traveled with Cons't Co. until their
oldest son was ready for school, in 1952. At
this time they built a home in the N.E. part
of Mullen where the family remained and
John continued to work for Franke until 1973
when he and son Joe, bought 2 draglines
which they operated until 1983 when John
sold to Joe and retired. Still living in the same
home they built in 1952. John and Lucy had
3 youngsters. All baptized and belonged to
Episcopal Church. Gary Joe Isom born
1947 at Scottsbluff. Terry John Isom born
1952 at Mullen. Patty Leanne Isom
(Bader) born 1954 at Valentine. All
three and both parents were graduates of
Mullen High School. John's hobby now is
working and welding horseshoes, and attend-
ing his lawn and garden.

Lucy Irene Junod was born in Kermoor,
Penn. at the home of her grandparents, when
she was 15 months old her Mother returned
to her parents (Kime) home in Neb. followed
shortly by her Father. Most of Lucy's young
life was spent in Hooker and Cherry counties.
She started to school in Mullen, the family
then moved to Cherry Co. where she attended
various country schools and 2 years in
Valentine. In 1927 the family moved Wyo.
but returned in one year to Cherry C. because
of health reasons. In 1936 they moved to
Mullen where she graduated from Mullen
High School in 1940. In 1942 she entered
West Neb. Methodist Hospital School of
Nursing in Scottsbluff with affiliation in
Denver and Hastings, she graduated in Oct.
1945. She has always been associated with,
and worked in the medical Profession with
Drs in surrounding areas and various medical
boards, she remains on the staff of The
Pioneer Memorial Hospital at Mullen. In
1945 Lucy married John Isom and to this
union were born 3 children. (in Johns record).

In 1966 she and John bought the `Tip Top
Variety' from Nellie Johnston which Lucy
operated until 1978 when they sold to Paul
and Lucile Schmoker. In 1968 we moved the
store from where Peg's Beauty shop is now
to its present location, across the street from
the bank and was renamed (`Lucy's).

At present she is semi-retired, but still
active in the Medical field, Episcopal church,
and several other boards in the community.

Hobbies: All crafts, crocheting, bridge and
antique dishes.

Late edition: in 1955 I received the Com-
munity Good Neighbor Award, and later an
AK-SAR-BEN award (1955) for medical
services rendered.
