JOHNSTON, NELLIE E.

Nellie Johnston.
Nellie E. Johnston was born on March 4,
1900 near Havensville, Kansas to Adam and
Ida Johnston.
She attended school in Kansas and later
graduated from the Grand Island School of
Business.
Nellie then moved to Lusk, Wyoming
where she worked and held an elected office
of Niobrara County there. After a few years
she moved to Mullen and worked as a
secretary and bookkeeper at Lowe's
Hardware Store for a number of years.
ln the early 1940's she started the Tip Top
Variety Store which she operated for many
years. She was later joined by her sister Mary
Gugelman who helped with the store. In 1960
Mary retired to Curtis, Nebraska and was
joined by Nellie when health problems forced
her to retire. She sold the store to Lucy Isom.
Nellie was a member of the Methodist
Church, WSCS, and was very active in both
as well as the Sunday School. She was a
member and Past Matron of the Order of
Eastern Star, a member of Rebekah Lodge,
and a member of Hospital Auxiliary and a
past President. She was a good community
worker - always willing to do her part and
a bit more.
She died at Curtis, Nebraska on May 16,
1974. The funeral service was in Mullen at the
Methodist Church and interment was at
Lusk, Wyoming.
