LONG, CALVIN FLOYD AND MARGUERITE (MARSH)

Floyd and Marguerite Long 50th Anniversary 1976

Floyd was born July 8, 1904 in a sod house
in south Cherry County, Nebraska to Charles
and Irene (Boyer) Long. He was the 5th of
nine children, 3 boys and 6 girls. Floyd and
Marguerite Marsh were united in marriage
November 22, 1926. Marguerite Elza Marsh
was born May 2, 1908 in Wesington Springs,
South Dakota to Charlie and Delilah (Sheets)
Marsh.

Floyd attended the Wells School through
the 8th grade, going about 3 miles on foot,
sometimes horseback or in a spring wagon.
He worked as a hand on farms and ranches
while he was growing up. He liked to pick corn
and could husk a load quicker than most
anyone. He used to come in first in the local
foot races, Clarence LeLaCheur was a usual
second. Floyd worked 19 years for Arthur
Buchfinck on the ranch before moving to
Mullen in 1951. He was always active in
sports and liked to hunt game and coyotes
with a horse and hounds, fished and swam in
the North Loup River and some lakes. He
belonged to the Dry Valley baseball team, the
Prentice baseball team and the Mullen team.
He played 3rd base then catcher when he
joined the Mullen team. Floyd started a new
softball field in Mullen in the 50's and
managed both the softball and baseball
teams and also a basketball town team in
Mullen. He has announced the ballgames
over a loud speaker since the late 50's, the
speaker system was bought from the proceeds
after the last baseball team broke up. Mar-
guerite kept the game score books, too.

Floyd married Edna Gorsuch at Roggin-
ton, Wyoming in 1924, she died in, 1925 and
is buried in the Cedarview Cemetery.

Floyd and Marguerite Marsh were married
in Valentine, Nebraska November 22, 1926.
To this union, three children were born,
Gerald Floyd September 14, 1934; Verla
Arlene December 19, 1937 and Charlsie
Delrene September 20, 1939, in south Cherry
County with a rancher, Dr. R.G. Roth
officiating with the help of Maud Denson, a
neighbor acting as mid-wife, and sister-in-
law, Iva Marsh for Charlsie's birth. (Maud
was the daughter of Bart Howe).

Floyd and I managed a hardware store
until 1960 and then changed to a recreation
parlor, in what was known as the old Delica-
tessen, on Main street next to the bank. We
have owned this building since 1951 and still
live in the apartments upstairs.

Floyd helped with the building of the
Mullen Memorial Hospital, worked on the
state and Cherry county roads.

Our children graduated from the Mullen
High School; Gerald in 1952, Verla in 1955
and Charlsie in 1957. Gerald's three children
also graduated from Mullen High School;
Leann in 1972, John in 1974 and Darlene in
1975. Toi Sherman went two months in
Kindergarten to Mullen Grade School, she is
our great-grandaughter.

We celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniver-
sary November 27th, 1976 in the Mullen
United Methodist Church, hosted by our
three children, their family, which consisted
of their children, our eleven grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren which were all
present except two grandsons. We celebrated
our 60th Wedding Anniversary November 22,
1986 at the Great Plains Regional Medical
Center in North Platte where Floyd was a
patient. Our daughter, Verla and grand-
daughter, Debb were present and a friend of
Verla's and also Debbi's husband. We have
at this writing, eleven grandchildren and
fourteen great-grandchildren and we enjoy
them all.
