Pauline Boyer was born to Nellie and
Willie Boyer in June of 1920, at their ranch
9 miles north of Mullen. She received the first
eight years of her schooling at the country
school about one mile east of their home.
Most of those years the Teacher stayed at the
Boyer home. Pauline and her sisters and her
brother rode horseback to school, and one
winter, she and her sister Margaret rode
horseback to school when the temperature
was down to 32 degrees below zero. When
Pauline was a Freshman in High School, The
girls rode back and forth with the Mail
Carrier, and sometime later, a house was
purchased in Mullen and the children attend-
ed the schools in town and where Mrs. Isom
resided until the time of her death.
In 1937, Pauline was married to Edgar
Macke. They have lived in Mullen all of their
married life. Edgar was born in Iowa and
lived there until the health of his Mother
forced them west to Nebraska. The family
lived in the Hershey - Sutherland area until
Edgar finished High School and at that time
he came to Mullen looking for work. He
worked on ranches in the area for some time
and then found a job working for the Clyde
Arnold grocery and feed store, where he
worked at the time of his marriage. Later he
went to work for Chester Johnson and in 1946
he and Pauline purchased the Mullen Cafe
which they operated for about 2 years, when
he and Vilas Jones bought the Art Jacobson
business and formed a partnership called the
M. and J. store. Ed later assumed full
ownership when Vilas Jones decided to go
back to his first love and take employment
as a mechanic. Edgar and Pauline ran this
business until the spring of 1956, at which
time they bought out the Johnson Mercantile
store and operated it until the store was
completely destroyed by fire in the fall of
1974. Edgar was the Associate County Judge
of Hooker County from January of 1973 until
the end of 1981, at which time he was advised
by his physician to retire because of health
problems.
Edgar and Pauline both enjoy playing golf
and spend many summer days at the golf
course. Edgar has a woodworking shop that
occupies much of his time during the winter
months. In February of 1987, he underwent
Heart by-pass surgery and is recuperating
very satisfactorily.
Edgar and Pauline have five children:
