    Children and their Families

Violet Mathews, the oldest of the family
lives in Mullen. She was born November 19,
1904 at Phillips, Nebraska. She attended
school in Cherry and Hooker Counties, and
graduated from Mullen High School in 1924.
She married John F. Kraye June 1937. John
was born in the small town of Banter, now a
part of Wilhelmshaven, German, August 31,
1904. He came to Nebraska in 1928 and to the
Sandhills a few years later. Violet taught
school for 23 years in the Mullen area and 3
years at Liberty, a county school near Morrill,
Nebraska. John made one trip to Germany in
1952 to visit relatives and friends. He passed
away March 14, 1981 at their home in Mullen.

Arthur (Swede) Mathews was born at
Grand Island, Nebraska, May 16, 1906. He
moved to the Sandhills in 1910 with his
parents, and received his education in the
rural schools of Cherry and Hooker Counties.
He graduated from Mullen H.S. in 1924.
Swede and his wife Vera Mae (Long) had two
daughters, Marcenia (Zutavern) and Cecilia
(Nutter). Swede was part owner of Mathews
Chevi Co. until December 1975. He enjoyed
his ranch and was a life-long hunter and
fisherman. Vera Mae busied herself with
sewing, community and church work. She
preceeded Swede in death. Swede passed
away July 7, 1983. Marcenia's children;
Conrad, Zackery, John, and Sara. Cecilia's
children; Bridget and Melanie.

Ruth Doris Mathews was born at Alliance,
Nebraska, August 17, 1910. When she was six
weeks old she moved with her parents to a
Kinkaid in south Cherry County. In 1920, the
family moved to Mullen to go to school. She
graduated from Mullen High in 1928 and
received her degree from Chadron State
College in 1963. She was a teacher for 34
years. Ruth married Franklin J. Stoughton
September 20, 1934. Frank was a mason and
carpenter. He was reared and lived his early
life in the Ogalalla, Nebraska vicinity. He and
Ruth were very active workers in the church
and community. Traveling was one of Ruth's
many interests, twice to Europe, many tours
in the states. Frank proceeded her in death.
Ruth passed away July 22, 1987.

Mabel Della Mathews was born near the
Fern Post office, March 31, 1914. She was
born in a soc house on her parents Kinkaid.
She received her education in the Mullen
schools and graduated from Mullen High in
May 1931. She also attended Kearney and
Chadron State Colleges. May 30, 1941, she
married Albert Owen Jones by Bishop Bee-
cher. She taught school 28 years and was a
ranchwife for over 30 years. She is very
interested in community affairs and has held
several important offices pertaining to them.
Her husband "Pete", continues to keep busy
with ranch work. All their children live in the
Sandhills area. Alberta (Kramer), their chil-
dren; Veronica, Shawna and Hyde. George,
no family. Charles, no family. Mary Jo
(McCune) children; Erik, Ryan, Clark and
Rusty.

George Mathews was born April 27, 1916
at Fern, Nebraska. After graduating from
High School in 1935, he worked as a mechanic
and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in
the South Pacific. He received Bronze and
Silver Stars and a Purple Heart. He married
Betty Amend, May 10, 1948. They had 3 sons,
Kam, who died at 3 months; Mark, who is an
electriction at St. Paul, Nebraska; Rocky,
who also is an electrictian at Plattsmouth,
Nebraska. He has three children; Kristy,
Emily and Andrew. George passed away at
Scottsbluff, Nebraska September 13, 1986.

Paul Edward Mathews was born May 24,
1919 in Hooker County near Mullen, Nebras-
ka. He was a graduate of Mullen High School
and the University of Nebr. After serving in
the army, he returned to the family business.
He left that business in 1964 to enter Seabury
Western Theological Seminary. He was made
deacon December 1966 and ordained a priest,
June 1967. He served Episcopal Churchs in
Central City, Albion and Holy Spirit in
Bellevue (1970) in Nebraska. Because of poor
health he was forced to retire from active
ministery in 1981. Paul was married to Joan
Long April 12, 1942. Their son Steven Roy,
married Kathy Eichorn and they have three
children; Melissa, Joanna, and John Patrick.
Paul passed away at Mesa, Arizona, Novem-
ber 7, 1984.
