Clyde W. McCully was born December 28,
1897 at Chillicothe, Missouri to Lee and Mary
Martin McCully. As a young man he came to
the Mullen area where he worked on various
ranches.

Before he was married he drove a horse and
buggy for Dr. D.A. Walker, taking him
anywhere he was called in the surrounding
country. On the way out Dr. Walker would
sleep and then Clyde would stay in the buggy
and sleep while the Doctor did whatever was
necessary at the home. It seemed most of
these calls were at night.

On June 29, 1921 Clyde was married to
Sophie K. Johansen. Sophie was born Jan-
uary 15, 1894 at Columbus, Nebraska. Her
parents were Johan C. Johansen and Kather-
ine Hendriksen Johansen. Sophie taught
school in the Anselmo, Nebraska area in 1914.
She had worked as a secretary in the U.S.
Treasury Department office in Washington
D.C. and at the time of their marriage was
working in the U.S. Treasury Department
office in Omaha, Nebraska. Clyde and Sophie
had both attended the Brownville, Nebraska
elementary school.

After their marriage they moved to their
homestead which was near Hecla, Nebraska,
section 26, township 24, range 25 west. Some
of their neighbors were Bird V. Bryant,
Daniel W. McCoy, Nirm F. Campbell and
Martha Bonnifield.

The couple had three children, Mary
Katherine, born 1922, Joe Wallace
born 1924, and Ethelyn Gertrude
born 1927. Mary is married to Oral
Harmon and lives in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Joe and his wife, Sharon live in Pierre, South
Dakota. Ethelyn and her husband Burdett
Thompson live on a farm near Sargent,
Nebraska.

They moved to Lyman, Nebraska where
Clyde worked as a dragline operator con-
structing the irrigation ditches for the Path-
finder Irrigation Company.

Sophie passed away on September 1, 1970
and Clyde passed away September 12, 1971.
They are buried at Brownville, Nebraska.
