John and Frances Munn. Wedding Day, June 4, 1947.


John L. Munn was born June 12, 1920
(Died in April of 1979 from lung cancer) in
Custer County where he attended. schools.
His parents were George Emersen Munn and
Flora Cecile (Spencer) Munn. John had nine
brothers and sisters. One sister died in
infancy. John's father died as a result of a
haying accident when John was quite young.
The older children were farmed out to other
relatives and the younger children stayed
with their mother. John went to work at the
age of 15 for Ross Hager. During World War
II he served with the Fifth Armored Division
in Europe in the U.S. Army. After his
discharge he returned to work for Ross.

John married Frances Aileen Van Zandt
(Born December 21, 1926, died in October of
1981 from breast cancer) of Mason City,
Nebraska, on June 4, 1947. Her parents were
William Francis Van Zandt and Mattie Pearl
(Lamb) Van Zandt. Frances had three broth-
ers: Merle (Mose), Duane (Mart) and Jack.
Frances graduated from the high school at
Mason City in 1944. After graduation she
taught school for a few years in the Mason
City area.

John and Frances had two children:
Charles Ross, born 1951, and Joan
Marie, born 1954. After Charles got
married in July, 1976, they moved to Mullen
to a house west of the intersection of Veteran
and Second Streets. (This house is currently
owned by Doug and Betty Deibler.) They had
lived in this house during the school year
while Charlie and Joanie were attending
school.

John and Frances were both very active in
Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. John had
also served on Mullen's school and hospital
boards.
