Julius C. Piel and Mollie Maire were
married in the Hastings, Nebraska area on
June 20, 1906. Six children were born to this
couple, all within the same vicinity: Harry in
1907, Bernadette in 1908, Dorothy in 1910,
Arvel in 1913, Josephine in 1916, and Earl in
1919. They moved to the Sandhills in the
Mullen area during the Spring of 1922 which
was their home until they both passed away.
They worked hard raising their family as
everyone did. Julius, or Joe as everyone called
him, always said he wanted to live to be 80
years old but he passed away in September
just before his 80th birthday on October 1st.
He did get to celebrate with his wife their
50th and 55th wedding anniversaries, which
both enjoyed a great deal. Mollie lived on the
ranch for a couple years after Joe passed away
and then moved to town and lived in an
apartment for a few years before moving to
the rest home where she was very happy until
she passed away in August, 1982. The nurses
always said she never lost her sense of humor
no matter what happened.

Josephine Piel lived in the country and
attended the country schools until she gradu-
ated from 8th grade then attended Mullen
High School. First two years she worked for
her board and room and the last two years
another girls and she did light housekeeping.
Josephine taught school for 3 years and
married Melvin (Bill) McIntosh in 1936.
They had two daughters, Janet and Melva,
and two sons, Dale and Melvin Lee. All four
of her children were graduates of Mullen
High School. Once the children were in
school, Josephine started working at Mullen
Co-Op. After 25 years of employment she
retired in January, 1978, at which time the
Co-Op gave her a trip to Hawaii as a
retirement gift. Her husband, Bill, and she
had lots of plans once she had retired, which
were short lived when Bill was killed in an
accident on their place in May 1978. Their
son, Melvin, remained at the place after Bill's
death and is still running trucks, cattle, etc.
just as Bill did when he was alive. Josephine
remarried in April of 1984 to James Johnson
of North Platte and they presently reside at
their Mullen home.
