John H. Welton was born in Cleveland,
Minnesota January 12, 1865. He came to
Nebraska in 1879 to Holt County and
receiving his education in country school and
later High School in O'Neil and then started
in the newspaper business. He married Mary
M. Chisholm in 1893, four children were born
to this union. In 1901 he was married to
Mattie E. Everett, they had one child who
died in infancy, age one.

John Welton came to Mullen and settled
in 1901 when he became owner of the Hooker
County Tribune. At that time it was the only
newspaper in the County. It was loyally
supported by the people with a circulation of
more than 700 copies. It had a good adverti-
sing patronage that gave the paper steady
growth.

Mr. Welton, a Republican and a member
of the Congressional Committee for the Sixth
District and also chairman of the Republican
County Central. He was a member of the
Village Council and spent his life doing all in
his power to help build up his part of the
State of Nebraska.

Mr. Welton devoted 27 years to newspaper
work. He followed the business in South
Dakota, Iowa and other places. He was editor
of Thomas County Herald, the latter being
under the management of his son Ross H.
Welton and the paper was published at
Thedford, Nebraska.

John Hewitt Welton died November 25,
1928. Interment in the Cedarview Cemetery
in Mullen.
