YOUNT, AMADORE FAMILY

Amadore and Anna Yount. Taken at their home

Amadore Yount came to the Sandhills
from Craig, Mo. in 1912. He took a homestead
in Cherry County north of the North Loup
river about 35 miles northwest of Mullen.

On Dec. 12, 1916 he married Anna Pink-
beiner of Graham, Mo. Anna had lived on a
farm south of Graham and had taught school
around Craig for several years. They moved
to the homestead and lived there for nearly
25 years.

In the early years there were no automo-
biles and supplies had to be freighted by
freight wagons and horses from Mullen. It
took more than one day to go there and back
so the freighter usually stayed over night with
families along the way. Two of the names that
are remembered are Colonel Osborne and the
Littles, there were others too, and Amadore
often spoke of them kindly. By the middle of
the 1920's nearly everyone had a car which
made life a little easier. There were many
broken arms caused by cranking the old
model "T".

Amadore and Anna had three children,
Violet, Elsie and Amadore Jr. They all
attended country school for two or three
years then went to Mullen for the school year
and spent the summers at their home in the
country. Anna moved to town to send the
children to school while they were small.

After they sold the homestead they lived
for several years north of Seneca and on the
Red ranch east of Seneca. In 1948 they moved
to Irvington, Nebr. and in 1962 to Glenwood,
Iowa where they lived until their deaths,
Amadore in 1965, and Anna in 1985.

Violet was born Febr. 16, 1918. She gradu-
ated from Mullen High School in 1936. After
graduating she taught school for two years,
one year north of Seneca and one year in the
Brownlee school. She was married to Nathan
Hazen of Brownlee on Aug. 12, 1937. They
lived in the Brownlee and Mullen area until
1945 when they moved to Glenwood, Iowa.
They purchased a hotel there and operated
it for 29 years. They are now retired and make
their home in Glenwood. Their daughter,
Linda, was born in Mullen, 1943. She
lives in Omaha and has two boys, Brian and
Jeffrey Ward.

Elsie was born July 9, 1919. She graduated
in 1937 from the Mullen High school then
attended Kearney State Teachers college.
She taught in the rural schools and for several
years in the Seneca school district. She
married Howard Waggoner and they moved
to Papillion, Nebr. in 1947. They operated a
locker plant there until 1949 when they
moved back to a ranch north of Mullen. In
1974 they returned and moved to Shelby,
Nebr. Howard passed away in 1976 and Elsie
in 1977. They had two children, Gary and
Mary Ann. Gary married Janice Strohbehn
in 1965. They live in Omaha and have two
boys, Daniel and Jason. Mary Ann graduated
from Mullen High school with the class of
1966. She and Roger Bird were married in
1975. They now live in Lampe, Mo. They have
a daughter, Amanda, and a son, Christopher.

Amadore Jr. was born in Mullen
1927. He attended the schools in Mullen and
graduated from High school with the class of
1945. In the spring of 1948 he and his parents
moved to Irvington, Nebr. He enlisted in the
Marines in Oct. 1948. He was stationed at
Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California. He
went to Korea with the First Marine Division
in the summer of 1950. He died on a battle
field somewhere in South Korea August 17,
1950.
