Their first employment was on the `101'
ranch, later moving into town and running
a family-style restaurant.

Alex came to Mullen from Chicago for
health reasons and was employed by Henry
Lowe's Hardware Company. His two sisters,
Eunice and and Leslie, followed him in a short
time and promptly homesteaded on land
south of Mullen. Alex's parents, John and
Louise Burnett, also came from Chicago to
Mullen and lived with Alex and Pearl after
their marriage in 1912, on a homestead one-
half mile from Alex's two sisters. Alex
continued to work for Lowe's Hardware
through three generations of Loews, Henry,
J.E., Louis and Kenneth.

After retirement, Alex and Pearl left
Mullen to live with their daughter, Yvonne
Mae, in Colorado, until their deaths.

Pearl and Alex loved Nebraska and all
their friends. They experienced the hard-
ships of prairie fires, dust storms, blizzards
and droughts with the same spirit of hearti-
ness and faith of all their friends and
relatives.

The early settlers of Nebraska, giving of
their strength and determination, left a great
heritage for all those who followed.
