AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY UNIT 109
Mullen American Legion Auxiliary was founded at Mullen, Nebraska on June 28, 1930. The following officers were elected: President, Lucy Gibson; Vice. Pres., Lessie Goldizen; Secretary, Marian Luke; Treasur-er, Elvia Boyer; Historian, Anne Motl; Chap-lain, Sara Boyer; Sergeant at Arms, Birdeen Carrier.
On March 12, 1931 the records show that Mrs. Cleo Campbell wrote the names on the Charter as follows Elvia M. Boyer, Sara A. Boyer, Leah Bray, Vallie Bressler, Birdeen C. Carrier, Mary C. Clutter, Callona Dietrich, Mae Ridenour, Lucy Gibson, Lessie Goldiz-en, Amanda Hanson, Clara C. Humphrey, Clara E. LeHew, Marion Luke, Alice B. Paine and Zoe Weigardt.
On May 13, 1947 it was moved and seconded that the Charter be sent to head-quarters at Lincoln to change the name from Mullen Unit to Marcy-Upton Unit 109 to correspond with the Legion Post. The name of Marcy-Upton was selected in 1933 in memory of Warren Marcy and Vernon Upton who gave their lives for their country during World War I. They were laid to rest in the Cedarview Cemetery, Mullen, Nebraska.
Women are eligible to belong to the Auxiliary through the membership of their husbands, sons, fathers, brothers or grand -fathers membership to the American Legion. The purpose of Auxiliary is service. It assists veterans and their families who are in hospitals or unable to work. It sells poppies and other products made by veterans in hospital work-shops, gives a cheery Christ-mas to all veterans confined in hospitals and homes and prevents children from paying in suffering and lack of opportunity for the service their fathers gave to our country. Activities of the Auxiliary in the Mullen community are the Memorial Day and Vet-erans day programs, Girls State, community scholarship, Poppy Day, Memorial Day decorations and other donations.
Through the years the Legion Auxiliary has established community center buildings, worked for good roads, obtained play-grounds, sponsored units of Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the establish -ment of libraries. It has remained an active organization in the Mullen area for over 50 years. At the present time it has 85 members.
